LessWrong Overview

At the moment I am a computational materials physicist.

Networking:

I'm looking to expand the number of interesting people in my social circle, digital or otherwise. Feel free to contact/message me. I'm not a particularly angry or sensitive person, so if you notice I've said something stupid, please let me know and don't be too concerned about offending me.

I am passively looking for a full time job, and actively working to determine both the extent to which moral concerns/the needs of humanity as a whole should dictate my career choice, and what work is most likely to benefit humanity as whole. Once I make more progress on evaluating the impact of various careers, I will most likely be actively looking for a full time job as well.

I am also actively looking for collaborations and worthwhile projects to be involved in, both productive and educational.

Philosophically:

-I am relatively suspicious of claims about the technological singularity, because I feel like there's a significant disconnect between where science is currently and some of the proposed technologies. I don't think that scientific progress is inevitable, and my experience in physics has been that nature is capable of surprising me on inferential leaps orders of magnitude smaller than many of the ones pro-singularity futurists tend to gloss over.

-It isn't obvious to me that there is a flaw with the core arguments for FAI, which I find worrisome. I'm also somewhat concerned by the estimates of a greater than 5% chance of human extinction within the next century.

-I'm interested in altruism in general and in effective altruism in particular. The former because it seems sort of arbitrary that I would value people more based on physical proximity, and the latter because I'm becoming more and more aware of the pitfalls of convenience bias/the availability heuristic.
