I am a postdoctoral scholar at the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford, conducting research on how to do research. I am particularly interested in the logic underlying study designs for comparative effectiveness research in medicine, and also have a more general interest in reasoning about why science as currently practiced often fails to get any closer to the truth.

I am originally form Oslo, Norway. In prior lives, I was a medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a doctoral student in epidemiologic methodology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

I have been reading Less Wrong/Overcoming Bias since around 2007. I live at the rationalist group house Tesseract in Palo Alto, and organize the South Bay Less Wrong Meetup. While I identify strongly with the rationalist community, I differ from the stereotypical initiate in the Bayesian Conspiracy in that I am not polyamorous, in that I generally have no interest in cuddle puddles, and in that I have less than zero interest in optimized meal replacements.

I use this account for discussing matters which are relevant to my professional identity, including causality, decision theory and prediction markets. I occasionally use a separate Less Wrong username for discussing more controversial topics. My "secret identity" is not intended to be concealed from the community, but I do not want comments made from the other account to be connected to my name with a simple Google search
